Veil into Wedding Garter Tutorial

My daughter gets married in about 30 days!  Very exciting.
Of course, she didn't want to wear my wedding dress, although I really don't blame her.
She also did not want to wear my veil, another thing I don't blame her for.  It was all perfect in 1984! So in style.  But not in 2012!

I made the veil myself with tulle and the leftover trim from my dress. I loved it and I was very proud of making it .

Here is Daughter modelling.

I figured, why not use the veil for something she could wear?  So I went through and unstitched all the little trim pieces and detached it from the crown part. Then I flattened out the tulle and cut a three inch wide strip.

I ran two lengths of gathering stitches down the center.

Then I pulled up the threads and pinned the 3/4 inch wide ribbon down the center.

I stitched, using navy thread, along each edge and then removed the gathering threads.

Then I measured Daughter's thigh and cut a length of 1/2 inch wide elastic, then threaded it through the opening between the tulle and ribbon.

The two ends were sewn together to secure the elastic and complete the circle.

I sewed two pieces of the saved trim onto the garter and an old earring from her great grandmother was hot glued in between.  This will be the throwing garter.
The second one will be her keepsake.  It only has a small covered elastic bit on the back side.  Hopefully neither one will be itchy or uncomfortable to wear.

Thanks for stopping by.

Minnie Mouse style Apron

My Son asked if I would make a Minnie Mouse inspired apron for his best friend's wife.  I'm always up for a challenge.  I ordered the fabric online and then modified pieces of several patterns to create my own pattern for this polka dot apron.

I bought trim at Joann.

It took about one full day to create the pattern and sew the apron.

It seemed to plain with just red and white.  I went back to Joann and purchased yellow felt.  We had just bought a set of Mickey Mouse cookie cutters so I traced the hand, cut two pieces and sewed them together by hand using the blanket stitch.  Then I sewed a pin back onto it.  Makes a cute removable "brooch."

Of course, the black T-shirt sets off all the red, makes it really pop!
Thanks for checking out my new creation.  Maybe I will make another or use a different print for this 50's inspired pattern.  Thanks Walt!

Show and Tell Tables

These lovely inlaid tables are from Syria. I wanted the largest one but they wouldn't break up a set. And I certainly didn't want to pay the $200 the shop owner was asking for them.
We were on the third floor of a very little, crowded with merchandise shop. Because bargaining for price is part of the culture, and I'm no good at it, I walked away, down two flights of stairs.
Husband is good at bargaining. In fact he enjoys it. So when all the back and forth was done, we got the set of tables for $100. A much better deal. The employee finally decided that his boss would rather sell something than not.
We wrapped up the tables and took them home. They were my Christmas present that year, 2003.

Yes, that is a Turkish made carpet. We purchased that in Jordan. And the coffee set is decorative rather than usable but is very representative of the coffee sets used "min zamaan", way back when.

They told me all the different woods used in the table, but I can't remember any! It is real mother of pearl, though, not plastic.

I've linked up with Show and Tell Friday at My Romantic Home. Check out all the other offerings and say hello to Cindy while you are visiting her blog.

Apron Obsession

Lately I've been obsessed with aprons. I do use a basic apron in the kitchen or when cleaning. So I made several from that design and listed them in my etsy shop. Check the link on the right hand side.

The four here are perfect for BBQing or working in the kitchen.

!
I recently found these delicious linens at garage and estate sales. Dresser scarves, kitchen towels, table runners. Some are hand embroidered with hand crocheted borders, the others are machine made, but still lovely.

They will all soon be made into aprons as well. Stay tuned!
Enjoy the sunshine if you have some near you. Ours will only last a few more days here in Northern California.

Beachy Bedroom Finale

Last fall we redid our daughters bedroom, updating the color and making it into a beach retreat. You can see that here

Since then we put a different quilt on the bed and got some super feather throw pillows. I got these for $15.00 for the pair at TJ Maxx. They are great because you can squish them up while reading a book late at night and then they plump back to their original form. Not like fiberfill pillows and others.

On the shelf are the covered books I won in a give-away from Perfectly Imperfect. I love the way they turned out. Shaunna was super about emailing to customize the books to match the room. I've become a fan of Shaunna's and love to see what she's up to in crafts and furniture refinishing. Check out her blog to see what she's doing currently.
The mirror is a little beauty that Husband picked up at a garage sale, in a funky brown wood color. He spray painted it and Daughter loved it! I may still put a little gold highlighting on the flowers. Maybe not, I don't know.
Hope you enjoyed the finished look in Daughter's room. Next week I'll try an update on Son's room. We went beachy stripes there!

Etsy Shop! Aprons

I have been fascinated with aprons lately. It started last December when I was teaching the high school students how to sew. They always get to start with an apron pattern that is super simple but makes a great BBQ style apron. It is such a feeling of accomplishment.

But I wanted to make girly aprons so I found a pattern with a cute flounce. Then I decided it was too complicated to keep making and created my own pattern for an apron with a ruffle.

This is the one with the ruffle. Extra long ties. And Daughter modelling!

This apron has magnolias on a super dark navy background. The white has little gold flecks all over it.

Monet style print with purple accents.

This apron has a cute green plaid and the orange print is a reprint of a feedsack from the 1930's. I love this. So June Cleaver! Daughter's BFF modelling here. She stays with us Monday through Thursday while she is going to school, her family moved away a few years ago and her school is near us. Saves on gas! Daughter lives in a dorm at Fresno State.
The next two aprons are the flounce apron. I picked retro yet modern prints for these. Neither has a pocket but each has a flower pin. So cute!

I decided to open an etsy shop to sell a few, and so I can make more! I'm working on a few simple BBQ style aprons now, but still girly. I'm working on a few half aprons as well. Cute combos of prints!

So check out my shop at www.dazeofgrace.etsy.com

Thanks so much for stopping by.
