Reupholstered Side Chairs

We recently purchased new furniture for our living room. (I'll show that later) The new stuff is a bonded leather product.  I thought these little side chairs had now become boring.  You can see one blending in to the wall here behind the Christmas tree.

We bought these two side chairs at a garage sale in 2004 for $5 each.  We stripped them down to the bare wood and stained them lightly.  I reupholstered them with a beige fabric with palm trees on it.  It worked at the time.

 

 

I decided to go bold! I painted the wood with bright red satin paint.  It took three coats to cover without streaks.

 

You can  see the palm tree fabric here.  I used the removed pieces for approximate patterns.  It took some effort to match the stripes.

 

 

 

 

I used my electric staple gun to attach the fabric.

 

 

The cord is the same cord from the previous incarnation.  We just carefully removed it and used the glue gun again to attach it.  It is a great trim and hides ALL the staples.

 

Finished! Front and back.

 

 

There is a pair of them.  I am happy with the way they came out.

Union Jack Dresser

In the middle of the summer a dear friend moving from California to the Mid West gave me this dresser.  It is super heavy and solid wood.  However, it had been painted white at one time and then spray painted black. It was in really sad shape.

 

 

 

 

It was the perfect candidate for the Union Jack treatment.  I took these pictures in my Husband's office.  Looks pretty cool. This is for sale.

 

 

 

 

A change of handles was a necessity.  It opens well and these handles don't obstruct the paint treatment.

Rose Compass Side Table

I wanted to show off a little side table I painted recently.  It was a garage sale leftover that no one wanted.

I painted it black and then Daughter and I painted a basic compass rose on the top.

The handles were changed to these cute knobs that have an eight pointed star on them as well to help carry the theme. 

It came out really cute. I think it would be nice in a living room or travel themed office or den (man-cave!)

Single Chair Refurbish

A couple of weeks ago Husband and I found this little old chair at a garage sale for $5! The wood was really dry and the fabric was really dusty.

It had three layers of nasty fabric,all dry and crusty and the foam stuffing fell apart on contact.  I removed all of that and finished the seat with new foam and some basic upholstery fabric.  I spray painted several coats of white on the chair and replaced the seat.  It came out alright.  

It's fairly cute and ready for sale.  Here it comes, Craigslist!

Refinished Dining Set #2

Un-pause!  It feels like my blog has been on pause since the spring.  I have been busy with setting up our new house after the move, helping my daughter plan her wedding, preparing for her bridal shower (which was held in our home), and taking furniture to her apartment in LA.

This is the dining set that I refinished for her.  We purchased it at least three years ago at a garage sale for $50.  It has been shuffled around in our garage since then.  I was thrilled to finally finish it and get it done!

First I removed the nasty seats and set them aside.

I sanded slightly and  rubbed them down with deglosser.  They were filthy!

The first coat of paint went on by hand.  Tedious!  Then we moved and Husband set up the paint booth.  I used my sprayer for the second coat and it went soooooo fast!

All six chairs were quickly done.

We taped and papered off the top of the table as it was that high gloss finish.  Even though it had a huge scratch in the finish it was better than trying to sand down through that plastic-like finish.

The legs and skirt (?) got the paint treatment.

I used Behr in Beluga, my go-to color.  Love it!  Undertones of blue.  Behr worked really well in the sprayer.  I have since used Glidden as well but it is a thinner paint and and spatters and leaves a sandpaper like finish.  Ick!

Here is the finished table in its new home!

I had to strip the chair seats down to the boards as they smelled horrible.  I used one of those eggcrate mattress pads for the padding and leftover canvas drop-cloth.

Of course their apartment is an average one bedroom and couldn't really hold six chairs.  Nor could Daughter's Toyota hold more than three chairs!  She took the other arm less one later.

I think the whole set turned out very well.

Just found a buffet/credenza on Craigslist for her.  Thinking it will be painted to match.

Wing-Back Chair Slipcovers

Here is my latest project.  First I have to say, my 22 year old daughter has the Spirit of an old man at times! She has wanted a Wing-back chair for several years.  And a good Cigar and a Globe Bar.

Well, she is on her own for the cigar and bar, unless I run across a globe for a good price at an estate sale.

We found these on Craigslist for $100 for the pair.  They are Broyhill and were originally purchased for $387 each (the price tag was still on one.)  Good Deal! And the fabric is exactly the color she loves and is in great shape with absolutely no tears or stains.

I thought it would be good for her to have slipcovers in case she didn't want them green all the time.

So I looked for tutorials and did some pinning first.

I checked out Miss Mustard Seed here and watched her videos.

Then I went to Honeybear Lane and read through her tutorial.

Then I decided to just go for it.

I had about 6 yards of a print fabric that I was not using so I created a pattern by draping, pinning, and cutting.

Then I labelled each piece and unpinned and stacked them.  It took me a while to find canvas dropcloths that were the cream color.  Home Depot and Ace Hardware had great ones...in grey.  Bleach won't help.  I checked at Sherwin-Williams and found these.  They are the 4' by 15' cloths.  It took three for two chairs.

There are so many tutorials out there that I am not giving step by step instructions.

I cut out the pieces from my pattern then pinned and sewed.

Here is the final product!  Front:

I used ribbon cut into sections for the ties. Back:

Daughter did not want a skirt of any sort.  I used the selvege edge of the dropcloths for the bottom of the slips.  The back closure is the ends where a seam hem was already provided.  Husband used the pinking shears to finish all the seam allowances. And, Yes, I did prewash!

Here are the chairs in their home: Daughter and Fiance's apartment! They have only had the apartment two weeks so there is not much for decoration-yet!

I think I will tackle slip-covers for my sofa, loveseat, and chair.  They need it!
